Tree nuts were previously limited in the diet because of being high in fats and calories. Mainstream health professionals do not even recommend consuming much of these foods due to their high fat and calorie content. This belief about tree nuts was previously being followed, but developments in medical research have indicated that in fact, the high fat content of tree nuts is considered to be “healthy fat” that helps the body undergo various processes.

Modern understanding on these fats include being able to prevent various diseases such as cancer, heart disease and neuro-degenerative conditions. In addition, these fats are also thought to be helpful in weight loss.

In line with these understandings, tree nuts including Brazil nuts, almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, macadamias, pine nuts, walnuts and pistachios are now recommended to be included in the daily diet of people due to their benefits in reducing obesity-related diseases.

These benefits of tree nuts were actually findings in a research published in the Journal of American College of Nutrition. The research found that tree nuts contain high amounts of high-density lipoproteins or HDL. HDL is considered good cholesterol because it does not only help the body utilize the essential fats for energy production, but also reduces the levels of low density lipoproteins or bad cholesterol in the blood. Bad cholesterol or LDL is the one responsible for atherosclerosis or the development of plaques in the arterial walls. By taking tree nuts regularly, you benefit from reducing your total bad cholesterol levels.

Aside from this, tree nuts also lower the levels of C-reactive proteins. C-reactive protein is actually a biomarker for inflammation. An increased C-reactive protein level may actually cause heart diseases because of chronic inflammation in the blood vessel walls in the heart.

These results prove the efficacy of tree nuts in preventing obesity-related diseases such as heart disease, stroke and even neurodegenerative diseases because of improved integrity of the blood vessels.

For people who want to lose weight, another research supported the role of tree nuts in reducing the Body Mass Index. The study involved 13,292 men and women who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 1999-2004.

According to the study, people who consume tree nuts on a regular basis have lower body weight and lower Body Mass Index. In addition, they also have a smaller waist circumference than people who do not consume tree nuts.

Specifically, those who eat tree nuts regularly have four pounds lower body weight than non-consumers. They also have a one inch smaller waist line.

Furthermore, tree nut consumers also have lesser risk of developing metabolic syndrome, which is a syndrome known to increase the incidences of diabetes, heart disease and stroke. With the consumption of tree nuts on a regular basis, you prevent possible heart disease, diabetes and stroke as well as obesity.

For those who want to lose weight in a healthy way, you may substitute your snacks with tree nuts. There is a variety of packaging of tree nuts, but choose the unsalted and roasted ones to benefit more from their healthy effects.
