You must have heard the name of south beach diet plan various times. Well, it is a famous diet plan for beginners being suggested by dietician Maris Almon and cardiologist Arthur Agatston. Initially, it was designed for patients who are prone to heart diseases. But then, eventually it also became popular as an ideal diet plan. South beach diet plan came in 1990 according to Dr. Agatston. He came to a conclusion that low fat regimes are not the only sufficient thing and are not much effective for an intercourse of a longer period.

Before knowing about the south beach diet plan, it is necessary to know about its introducers. Dr Arthur Agatston is a renowned associate professor of medicine and giving his services in the University Of Miami Miller School of medicine. Other cofounder of this diet plan, Marie Almon has about 25 years of experience in this field with her 11 years being contributed to cardiac rehabilitation center.

As is claimed by its makers, south beach plan diet is not just an ordinary and conventional diet. It is been designed in such a way that one is able to get correct amount of carbohydrates including of specific fruits, whole grains, appropriate fats like olive oil, canola oil and other protein sources essential for healthy living. South beach plan consists of three phases. Lets know in detail about each f its phase.

South Beach Plan Diet Phase 1:

Phase 1 is just the beginning of the whole process. Here participant is allowed to intake normal diet consisting of

  • Beans
  • Fish
  • Eggs
  • Lean meats
  • Nuts
  • Shellfish
  • Turkey
  • Chicken
  • Cheese with reduced fat
  • Desserts
  • Snacks

Phase 1 is followed for the first two weeks. In this phase, participant is allowed to have normal diet with about three balanced meals per day in addition to snacks. However, certain food items which are prohibited during this phase include:

  • Alcoholic drinks
  • Cookies
  • Bread
  • Sugar
  • Potatoes
  • Cake
  • Fruits
  • Rice
  • Pasts
  • Baked foods
  • Ice cream
  • Candy

However, participants do not require facing stress as the above prohibited foods will be introduced again in the phase 2 and 3 of this plan

South Beach Plan Diet Phase 2

During this phase, you will lose your weight until you reach your pre-decided level. The things which were prohibited in the first phase will now be reintroduced. You will allow to intake carbohydrates with some treats also coming in. Participants generally fear that they will aim their weight in this phase as carbohydrates are being allowed but it’s not so. According to makers, this diet can be followed throughout your life without gaining weight if you allow proper carbohydrates to enter your body. You are just required to monitor your body very well whenever you reintroduce a carbohydrate.

South Beach Plan Diet Phase 3

This is also called as maintenance phase. When you have reached your desirable weight, you enter here. Here you are required to obtain a lifestyle which can help you in maintaining the same weight forever.
